The African hunting dog - scientific name Lycaon pictus - is an endangered, highly social, pack‑hunting canine found across fragmented regions of sub‑Saharan Africa, with an estimated 6,600 adults remaining.

Often called the African wild dog, painted dog, or Cape hunting dog, Lycaon pictus is the only living member of its genus. It is distinguished from other canids by having only four toes per foot and highly specialized dentition for a hypercarnivorous diet.
